Plot summary
Bartholomew recruits Levi Kane, a former Marine Scout/Sniper, to guard the west tower of a remote, top-secret gorge. Drasa, a Lithuanian covert operative who works for the Kremlin, takes the east tower. Each must spend a year without contact with the other or with the outside world. Cloaking antennas keep the site hidden, and both towers are armed against the monstrous creatures in the gorge, known as The Hollow Men. Levi relieves J.D., who warns him about soldiers who went into the gorge in the 1940s and never returned, and about an emergency protocol called Straydog. After several quiet months, Drasa breaks the no-contact rule on her birthday, and the two begin talking by written signs.
