Plot summary
In the Motherland, fairy godmothers train so that wishes come true. Eleanor Bloomingbottom, the only student who is not elderly, commits to the craft even though she is not good at it. Another godmother tells her the school will close, since nobody wishes anymore, so Eleanor checks the assignment room and finds a letter from a ten-year-old girl named Mackenzie Walsh. The oldest student, Agnes, warns that being found out would shut the school and strip her powers. Eleanor reaches the real world, and a trucker drives her to Boston, where Mackenzie is a forty-year-old single mother of two working at a failing television station. Eleanor shows her magic, and Mackenzie takes her in. Mia and Jane are her daughters, and Paula is her sister.

- The film's hand-drawn animated epilogue was a pandemic pivot: director Sharon Maguire had considered hand-drawn animation before filming and dropped the idea, but the COVID-19 shutdown left the filmmakers unable to shoot any extra footage, so they revived it.
- Forty animators at Studio AKA worked remotely on the epilogue under supervising animator Aya Suzuki; the characters were hand-drawn, while the sets were created through CG.
- Stephnie Weir and Utkarsh Ambudkar improvised heavily while filming, and many of the scenes they made up on the spot survived into the final cut.
