Plot summary
Pastor Dave Hill leads St. James Church, which stands on the grounds of Hadleigh University, where controversy has been building against the congregation. A fire breaks out in the church and leaves it nearly ruined, and the college begins the process of closing St. James to put a student center in its place. Dave sues the college to keep the church open and asks his estranged brother, the attorney Pearce Hill, to take the case. Pearce, an atheist, tells him the fight is not worth having. Dave will not listen and takes the case toward court. Meg Harvey, who runs a local soup kitchen, is among those who help him keep going.

- The story is loosely based on five pastors in Texas who were subpoenaed over their sermons under the Johnson Amendment. In reality the subpoenas were dropped, and since 2008 only one of more than 2,000 mainly evangelical clergy who deliberately broke the law has been audited, and none punished.
