Plot summary
Amelia Bonetti and Pippo Botticella, whose stage names are Ginger and Fred, built a career copying the dance routines of Ginger Rogers and Fred Astaire, and they have been retired nearly thirty years. A Christmas television special, We Are Proud to Present, brings them back for a reunion. Amelia, a widowed grandmother, sees another turn in the limelight; Pippo, short of money, takes the job. She dines with a transvestite while she waits for him to reach the hotel. In the morning they ride a bus to the studio with the show's other guests, among them a company of midgets dancing the bolero, a plastic surgeon and a couple who record ghost voices. At the studio they rehearse their old number and sit for makeup and hairstyling, then wait in the wings while the special's other acts go on.

- Ginger Rogers sued in the United States over the film's title, claiming in Rogers v. Grimaldi that it violated her Lanham Act trademark rights, right of publicity, and was a "false light" defamation. The Second Circuit rejected the claim, finding that suppressing an artistically relevant but ambiguously titled film would unduly restrict expression.
