Plot summary
In Rome, Michele Apicella moves into a new apartment and takes a job teaching mathematics at an experimental high school where many of the teachers are eccentric and the teaching methods are peculiar. A solitary, neurotic man, scrupulous about his work, he is absorbed by the lives of the couples around him. He befriends a young couple, Massimiliano and Aurora, and is upset when he sees Aurora with another man. Murders unsettle the neighborhood, and a police inspector, believing Michele knows more than he admits, has him watched. Bianca, a new teacher at the school, interests him, and he interests her.
