Plot summary
Don Giulio, a young Roman priest, is assigned to a suburban church in Rome after serving as a parish priest on an island in the Tyrrhenian Sea. He is happy to rejoin his parents, his sister and the friends of his youth, leftists like himself in earlier days. The new parish is nearly empty, and the priest he replaced has married, has a son and lives a few steps from the rectory. His friends have changed: one faces a trial for terrorism, one wants to become a priest, another has been left by a female friend and lives in isolation. Giulio tries to help those around him but cannot resolve the troubles they bring him.
