Biography

Friedrich von Ledebur was an Austrian actor who came to the screen relatively late, making his film debut in 1945 after years of travel and odd jobs. Born in 1900 in Nisko, then part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, he served in the Austro-Hungarian Army during the First World War and settled in the United States in 1939. A friendship with director John Huston opened the door to character acting, and he became known for supporting roles. His best-known credits include Moby Dick (1956), in which he played the harpooneer Queequeg, Alexander the Great (1956) and Slaughterhouse-Five (1972). He also took a television role as Brother Christophorus in The Howling Man, an episode of The Twilight Zone. He died in 1986.
