Plot summary
The Italian army lands a handful of troops on Megisti, a small Aegean island, in 1941, to keep watch for enemy shipping. The men include Lieutenant Raffaele Montini, a former teacher of Latin and Greek who paints, Sergeant Nicola Lorusso, a veteran of the North African campaign, Private Eliseo Strazzabosco with his donkey Silvana, and the brothers Libero and Felice Munaron. The town they enter appears empty, and a radio message tells them the ship that was to collect them has been destroyed. The islanders then come down from the hills, saying they hid because the Germans took the men, and that these Italians seem harmless. Montini, an amateur painter, is asked by the island's Orthodox priest to restore the church murals.
