Giulietta Masina
Biography
Giulietta Masina was an actress whose career began in radio with Terzoglio (1942), a program written by Federico Fellini and centered on Cico and Pallina. Born in San Giorgio di Piano, she spent part of her youth in Rome, studied philosophy, and developed a love of theater. Her cinema debut came in Alberto Lattuada's Without Pity (1948), and she built her reputation with Behind Closed Shutters (1951), Variety Lights (1950), and Europe '51 (1952). Working with Fellini, she appeared in the Oscar-winning La Strada (1954), Il Bidone (1955), and the widely praised Nights of Cabiria (1957), which also won an Oscar and earned her Cannes Best Female Performance. Later films included Fortunella (1958), ...and the Wild Wild Women (1959), Ginger and Fred (1986), and Juliet of the Spirits (1965). She hosted a radio program titled Lettere aperte a Giulietta Masina from 1966 to 1969 and later appeared in the television series Eleonora (1973) and Camilla (1976). She died in 1994.
