Plot summary
Evicted from their Chicago apartment, Callie Spengler brings her children Trevor and Phoebe to Summerville, Oklahoma, to the farm her estranged father left behind. The place is cluttered and the townspeople remember him only as a dirt farmer who grew nothing. Phoebe, who loves science, finds a meter-like device under the chair where he died, and after making a move on a chessboard left mid-game, she watches the pieces answer and lights switch on to guide her to a trap hidden beneath the floorboards. Trevor takes a job at a burger stand to be near Lucky Domingo. Their teacher Gary Grooberson, who studies the tremors shaking the town, explains what the Ghostbusters were and what their equipment did.

Did you know?!Facts and trivia about Ghostbusters: Afterlife (2021)
Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.
- Dan Aykroyd wrote a script for a third Ghostbusters film titled Ghostbusters III: Hellbent, in which the Ghostbusters are transported to a parallel-universe Manhattan called Manhellton and confront the Devil.
- Harold Ramis's daughter Violet, whom director Jason Reitman befriended while making the first film, approved an early screenplay draft. She also posed in her late father's proton pack from the first film while prop makers built lighter versions for Mckenna Grace.
- Finn Wolfhard, who had dressed as a Ghostbuster while playing Mike Wheeler on Stranger Things, doubted he would get the role, saying Jason Reitman probably wouldn't even look at his tape.
- The Spengler farmhouse was a real set on a ridge that brought to mind the Psycho house. For the reveal of Ecto-1, an old barn was moved and rebuilt piece by piece on location.
- Two Ectomobiles were used during filming; the vintage 1959 Cadillac Miller-Meteor Sentinels required modern performance engines and suspension upgrades to complete stunt sequences filmed on real city streets.
- Harold Ramis's likeness was recreated with digital makeup by Pier Lefebvre and his team at MPC Film, scanned from his appearance in the original films and altered using photographs taken before his death and aged footage.
- Rob Simonsen studied Elmer Bernstein's score for the first Ghostbusters and recruited Bernstein's son Peter as a score consultant, and used the ondes martenot played by Cynthia Millar, who played the same instrument on Bernstein's 1984 score.
