Plot summary
A werewolf killed Charles's family when he was a boy, and before she died his mother gave him a silver amulet shaped like a wolf's head; he survived by springing a trap that dropped a chandelier on the beast. Twenty-five years on he rides with a band of hunters, putting a bullet into anyone infected with lycanthropy and burning the corpse. Their contract is a new strain of werewolf that can change three nights in a row. Daniel, who works for the town doctor, has examined the victims to work out how the creature behaves. He watches Charles unmask a swindle that Jaeger, a rival bounty hunter, is running on the townsfolk, and asks to join the hunt until Charles yields. Eva, Daniel's wealthy girlfriend, would rather he took a place at a medical college in the city.
