Did you know?!Facts and trivia about G.I. Joe: Retaliation (2013)
Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.
- Paramount pushed G.I. Joe: Retaliation from June 2012 to March 2013 to convert it to 3D, a delay that "gobsmacked" the industry because a Super Bowl commercial had already launched the campaign and warehouses of tie-in toys were waiting. The studio also wanted to avoid competing with Channing Tatum's Magic Mike.
- Hasbro's figures and vehicles reached shops in May 2012 for a film that would not open for another ten months. Variety reported the toys had been pulled and recalled, Hasbro halted new shipments, and Retaliation figures were still on shelves in Target, Wal-Mart and Toys R Us in December 2012.
- A crew member was killed on 22 November 2011 when the scissor lift he was operating fell on him in the New Orleans warehouse being used as a soundstage. OSHA assessed Paramount a 21,000 dollar penalty that was still being contested five years later.
- The Himalayan cliff battle was staged inside NASA's Michoud Assembly Facility, where the south vertical assembly building was fitted with a green screen wall at a very steep angle and rigging above to swing the stunt performers through. Fort Pike in Louisiana stood in for Fort Sumter in South Carolina.
- Bruce Willis's General Joe Colton exists because Sgt. Slaughter could not be used: Slaughter said the part was originally meant to be him, but a conflict between the toy companies Hasbro and Mattel stopped him taking it.
- Joseph Gordon-Levitt, who had played Cobra Commander in The Rise of Cobra, confirmed he would not return for the sequel because he was too busy with The Dark Knight Rises.
- Digital Domain took 227 of the film's effects shots, and the moment when Zartan shows the president his nanomite disguise was made with the same head replacement software developed for The Curious Case of Benjamin Button and Tron: Legacy.
- Pakistan's Central Board of Film Censors banned the film countrywide over its opening scenes, objecting that it showed the country as an unstable state, staged a fictional foreign invasion of Pakistan's nuclear installations, and depicted the assassination of the Pakistani president.
