Plot summary

Anna's elder sister Elsa can conjure ice and snow, and when she accidentally injures Anna with it, their parents ride with both girls to the trolls and then close the castle gates, keeping the sisters apart so Elsa can learn to control her gift. Years pass, and on the day Elsa is crowned queen the gates open at last. Anna meets Prince Hans of the Southern Isles, Elsa refuses to bless their sudden engagement, and the argument makes Elsa's powers burst out in front of the court. Elsa flees across the fjord and takes refuge on the North Mountain, leaving Arendelle locked in winter. Anna rides after her, and with the iceman Kristoff, his reindeer Sven, and a snowman named Olaf, she goes into the mountains to bring her sister home.

Did you know?!Facts and trivia about Frozen (2013)

Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.

  • Idina Menzel auditioned for Disney's Tangled and did not get the part, but the casting director kept a recording of her performance on her own iPhone and later used it to bring Menzel in to audition for Elsa in Frozen alongside Kristen Bell.
  • Josh Gad said he joined Frozen so early in development that the story was still close to the original Hans Christian Andersen fairy tale and actress Megan Mullally was attached to voice Elsa, long before Idina Menzel took the role.
  • Elsa's animated hair was built from 420,000 individual computer-generated strands, roughly four times the 100,000 hairs on an average human head.
  • The single shot of Elsa building her ice palace took fifty effects and lighting artists to create, and it required 30 hours to render just one frame using 4,000 computers working simultaneously.
  • Disney engineers built new snow-simulation software called Matterhorn, developed with mathematics researchers at UCLA using the material point method, because ordinary tools could not capture how real snow compresses into snowballs yet breaks apart like neither a solid nor a liquid; it ended up used in at least 43 scenes.
  • When Jennifer Lee was promoted to co-director in 2012, she became the first woman ever to direct a full-length animated feature at Walt Disney Animation Studios.
