Plot summary
In 1950s Pittsburgh, Troy Maxson collects garbage alongside his friend Jim Bono and gripes that the company gives Black men the lifting and never the driving. He and his wife Rose have a teenage son, Cory, and Rose keeps after Troy to finish the fence she wants around the backyard. Troy's brother Gabriel, whose head wound from the war left him impaired, has moved out to rent a room from a neighbor, and the payment Gabriel got from the army bought the house Troy lives in. Troy's grown son Lyons drops by on paydays to borrow money. When Rose reports that a college football program is interested in Cory, Troy refuses to sign the papers that would let him play.

- Previous attempts to film August Wilson's play were fruitless for years, partly because he insisted on an African-American director, and the adaptation came out over a decade after his 2005 death. Denzel Washington, who won a Tony in the play's 2010 Broadway revival produced by Scott Rudin, said in 2013 he meant to star in and direct it.
