Plot summary
Will Sawyer lost the lower part of his left leg to a suicide bomber's blast while serving with the FBI's hostage rescue team, and he now works as a private security consultant. Ben Gillespie recommends him to review the safety systems of The Pearl, a 225-floor tower in Hong Kong that is the tallest in the world. Sarah, a former Navy doctor, is his wife, and their twins Henry and Georgia live with him on the residential floors while he works. The Pearl's owner, Zhao Long Ji, gives Will a tablet that controls the building's systems and unlocks only to his face, then asks him to inspect the offsite security center. While Will is away from the tower, a fire breaks out inside it and his family is trapped on the floors above the flames.

- When Neve Campbell was cast as Sarah Sawyer, the wife of Dwayne Johnson's character in Skyscraper, four other actresses had been considered for the part: Maggie Q, Rachel Bilson, Jaimie Alexander and Mira Sorvino.
- The Pearl's look came from Chinese myth: the architectural rendering was based on a twisting dragon with a pearl in its mouth, and production designer Jim Bissell's team researched local myths and a Chinese fable for inspiration.
