Plot summary
When a virus turns people into the infected, survivors flee toward a safe zone on two buses. The first bus is attacked, and the passengers of the second, among them Jack, Patrick, Emma and her baby Lu, scatter; Emma is bitten. Nine years later Jack and Patrick live in neighboring houses divided by a fence and do not speak to each other. Lu, now nine, lives with Jack and calls him father, and he does not let her leave the property, though she talks to Patrick's dog through the fence. Patrick finds a half-eaten fox in the snow and follows the trail to an infected, which does not see him but turns toward the sound of gunfire from Jack's house.
