Plot summary
Philip Clark is a psychiatrist whose home has been strained since Evan, the younger of his two children, died in a car accident three years earlier. He and his wife Grace are distant from each other and from their daughter Lucy. One of Philip's clients, Daphne Flagg, is writing a book about her mental illness and the abusive relationship she left with his help. When Daphne's friend Joan dies in a hit-and-run, Philip takes her call. Daphne is then found dead outside her home. Her estranged brother James arrives at the scene, and Grace, sympathetic, invites him to dinner, where he speaks of a book of his own. Dr. Vanessa Fanning challenges Philip over the unconventional methods he used with Daphne, methods he never shared with his family.
