Plot summary
Margaret Matheson, a university psychologist, and her assistant Tom Buckley, a physicist, make their name exposing paranormal fraud. They look for what Matheson calls red lights, the small tells that give a trick away, and use them against mind readers, faith healers and ghost hunters. Simon Silver, a blind psychic who abandoned the stage decades ago after his loudest skeptical critic died suddenly, announces he will perform again, and television appearances follow. Buckley wants to take Silver on; Matheson refuses. The pair instead aim their surveillance equipment at a faith healer who once studied with Silver, while Buckley keeps pressing to go after Silver himself.

Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.
- Robert De Niro researched and met with psychics for his role and developed a cautious belief in the phenomenon, insisting there was no way they could have known certain things they told him, so he has to believe there is something there that they pick up psychically.
- Cortés spent a year and a half researching and writing the screenplay, studying both sides of the psychic powers issue offered by skeptics and believers, and concluded that some on each side exclude evidence that does not support their position.
- The screenwriter scripted the character of skeptical psychologist Margaret Matheson specifically with actress Sigourney Weaver in mind for the role, but with no advance commitment from her, and to his relief she signed on to the project after reading the script.
