Plot summary
Raised among the Indigenous American tribe that took him in after his mother was murdered, Tommy is known as White Knife and is promised in marriage to Smoking Fox by Chief Screaming Eagle. A run-in with Will Patch and his Left-Eye Gang, and with Clem, a food proprietor with one eye, comes before the arrival of the bank robber Frank Stockburn, who says he is Tommy's biological father and that he is dying of consumption. Frank speaks of $50,000 buried in a meadow. The next day bandits under Cicero descend on the village for Frank's big score, and he lets them carry him off toward the Singing Windmill so they will leave the tribe alone. Unable to find the money, Tommy sets out to take what the bandits demand, learning on the road that he has five half-brothers.
