John Densmore
Biography
John Densmore, born in Los Angeles, is an American musician best known as the drummer for the rock band the Doors, which he helped form in 1965 after playing with Robby Krieger in the Psychedelic Rangers and rehearsing with Ray Manzarek and Jim Morrison in Rick and the Ravens. He drummed on all of the group's records in a style shaped by jazz and world music, and he studied ethnic music with the jazz cellist Fred Katz. The Doors became stars in 1967 and sold more than 100 million units before breaking up in 1973, after which he and Krieger started the Butts Band. Densmore later worked in dance and theater, wrote the play Skins, and acted in the films Get Crazy (1983), Dudes (1987) and The Doors (1991). His books include the autobiography Riders on the Storm (1990) and The Seekers (2020). The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inducted him in 1993.
