Plot summary

The United States has held the America's Cup for more than a century when Will Parker joins the crew of Radiance, the yacht picked to defend it. Kate Bass, his sailing partner, has left racing to complete a master's in aeronautical engineering, and she declines his invitation to come along. Morgan Weld, Radiance's owner and skipper, chooses Will to captain the Eagle in practice, and Will meets Weld's daughter, Abigail. Weld gives Will a small crew and limited equipment. Kate finishes her degree, and in an International 14 race she and Will nearly win. Despite a job offer, she agrees to serve as his tactician.

Did you know?!Facts and trivia about Wind (1992)

Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.

  • America's Cup skipper Peter Gilmour was "Sailing Master" for the film: he was on board for all of the sailing sequences, controlled the boat while they were flying the "Whomper", and can be seen in many boat scenes surreptitiously laying a hand on the opposite wheel.
  • The film was inspired by a real America's Cup upset, the New York Yacht Club's loss of the 1983 America's Cup, filtered through the events of the 1987 America's Cup.
  • American Eagle (US 21), the red 12 Meter sailed to fame by Ted Turner in the mid-seventies, was used as the trial horse in the film; the boat had been a finalist in the 1964 Defender selection series but lost the selection to Constellation.
  • Lisa Blackaller, daughter of America's Cup skipper Tom Blackaller, acted as sailing double for Jennifer Grey for the small boat races in the International 14 class at Newport.
  • The yachts Radiance and later Geronimo were both depicted by US 46, a boat that had been sailed by John Kolius in the 1987 Louis Vuitton Challenger Selection Cup races.
  • Wind grossed just $96,798 at the box office in Australia, and the movie flopped at the US box office as well.
