Plot summary
In 1963, Ford vice president Lee Iacocca pitches buying Ferrari to lift the company's sales, and Henry Ford II sends a delegation to Italy. Enzo Ferrari uses the offer to land a better deal with Fiat and keep Scuderia Ferrari, then insults Ford and his company. Ford orders a racing division built to beat Ferrari at Le Mans. Iacocca hires Carroll Shelby, an American who won Le Mans in 1959 and has since retired from driving, and Shelby recruits his friend Ken Miles, an English driver and engineer. The two work on the Ford GT40 prototype in a hangar at Los Angeles International Airport. Miles's blunt verdict on the new Mustang turns Ford executive Leo Beebe against him, and Beebe argues that Miles is a public relations liability for the team.

Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.
- The project was originally set up to star Tom Cruise and Brad Pitt under the title "Go Like Hell" with Joseph Kosinski directing, but it collapsed when the budget ran too high, and Cruise dropped out partly because his character wouldn't be driving much in the film.
- Edsel Ford II, Henry Ford II's real son and a former Ford director, publicly objected to the film's depiction of his father, tweeting after seeing the trailer that "Tracey Letts is no Henry Ford II."
- The film's Daytona scenes were actually shot at Auto Club Speedway in Fontana, while other races were filmed at a Honda test track in Mojave Valley, the Big Willow course at Willow Springs, Road Atlanta, and the Porsche Experience in Carson standing in for Ford's Dearborn test track.
- Director James Mangold approached Harrison Ford about appearing in the film; although that didn't happen, the two later worked together on The Call of the Wild and Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny.
