Plot summary
A street hustler in New York City, Shawn MacArthur earns a living selling counterfeit goods. A group of young men working for Harvey Boarden, a ticket scalper who controls the corner, try to move him along; Shawn fights them off but loses his money and merchandise. Harvey later returns the money and offers him a winner-takes-all fight, and arranges a meeting with Martinez. Shawn's first bout is staged in a Brooklyn church against a Russian. Between fights he meets Zulay Velez, a waitress and single mother he once tried to sell a fake Harry Potter book, and at a club he meets Evan Hailey, a professional fighter who once shared a college team with Shawn and was coached by Shawn's father.
