Plot summary
Petey the Cat, an orange cat who terrorizes Ohkay City, plants a bomb in an abandoned warehouse, and the officer who chases him, Officer Knight, and Knight's dog are hurt when it goes off. Surgeons save the dog by setting his head on Knight's body, and the result takes up the badge as Dog Man, a cop who cannot speak but wins the city over by arresting Petey time and again. The escapes infuriate the mayor, who makes the Chief take Dog Man off the case, and he settles into a doghouse on the city's edge with a tennis ball from his old life. Petey, for his part, has bought a cloning machine and expects to make an assistant like himself.
