Norm MacDonald
Biography
Norm Macdonald was a Canadian actor, writer, and stand-up comedian known for a deadpan style and eccentric understatement. Born in Quebec City in 1959, he started in Ottawa comedy clubs and drew notice at the 1986 Just for Laughs festival. He wrote for Roseanne and The Dennis Miller Show before joining Saturday Night Live in 1993 as a writer and cast member; he spent five seasons there and anchored Weekend Update for three and a half seasons. After leaving in 1998, he co-wrote and starred in Dirty Work (1998) and headlined The Norm Show from 1999 to 2001. He voiced Lucky in Doctor Dolittle (1998) and provided voice roles for Family Guy, The Fairly OddParents, Mike Tyson Mysteries, and The Orville. He hosted Norm Macdonald Live and Norm Macdonald Has a Show, wrote the novel Based on a True Story, and released the posthumous special Norm Macdonald: Nothing Special (2022). Macdonald died in 2021.

First role
In 1985 Macdonald began performing at Yuk Yuk's in Ottawa on amateur nights. After his first set there, he ran out and vowed never to return, so the club's owner had to talk him into coming back.
Getting ready for a role
When Michael Richards refused to play himself in the scene reenacting the Fridays incident for Man on the Moon, Macdonald stepped in as Richards, though his character was never named.
A first
On May 15, 2015, Macdonald closed the stand-up portion of the Late Show with David Letterman. He cried during his set and told Letterman he truly loved him.
First role
Macdonald's first U.S. network television appearance came in August 1989 at age 29 on The Pat Sajak Show, and he returned five more times over the next seven months.
A change of course
Macdonald was hired as a writer on Roseanne for the 1992-93 season but quit the job in order to join Saturday Night Live.
