Plot summary
The Barrett family lives on a quiet suburban street: Lacy, Daniel, and their sons Jesse and Sammy, who talk to each other from their beds by walkie-talkie. Daniel is out of work, so the household depends on Lacy's income as a real estate agent. Kitchen contents are rearranged overnight into bizarre configurations, the alarm reports every entry point breached at the same moment, and hundreds of birds fly into the house. Sammy has a fit in the park. One night Lacy goes to his room after hearing a sound and finds a figure beside his bed; when she turns on the light, the room is empty. Sammy is discovered outside with no memory of having gone out. Lacy starts searching for an explanation.
