Then he notices a growth in a corner of the bathroom: The Mold, which talks, and which sets out to earn his confidence. The Mold was born of the filth that had gathered there. Its advice is practical: Ian is told to clean himself up and to change how he lives, and he follows it. Following it brings him to the attention of Leah, a neighbor he had only ever watched through his peephole.
