Plot summary
Staff Sergeant Shane Matthews and Sergeant Allen Isaac, a sniper and the spotter who works with him, are sent to a pipeline site out in the desert as the Iraq War nears its close. Contractors and the guards hired to protect them have all been shot there. The two men hold their position on overwatch for twenty-two hours before they decide the site is clear, and Matthews goes down to look it over. A hidden Iraqi sniper fires and hits him. Isaac runs out to pull him back and is wounded in the right knee; the shot damages his radio and destroys his water bottle. He is left alone behind an unsteady wall, tending his wounds, while a voice comes over his radio.
