Plot summary
In 1970 Ashraf Marwan lives in London with his wife, Mona, a daughter of Egypt's president, Gamal Abdel Nasser, and their son. He argues that Egypt should talk to Israel with the United States as broker, and that it should cut its ties to the Soviet Union. Nasser rejects the advice and tells Mona to leave her husband, a remark Ashraf overhears. Nasser has him followed, and Mona fears he is having an affair with the actress Diana Ellis. After Nasser's death the family is recalled to Cairo, where Anwar Sadat becomes president. Ashraf earns Sadat's trust by uncovering corruption in the government. In London, Mossad agents confront him with a recording of his call to the Israeli embassy, and he begins passing Egypt's secrets to a handler named Alex.
