Plot summary
At Northwood Headquarters, Colonel Katherine Powell takes charge of a mission to seize three senior Al-Shabaab figures who have gathered at a house in Nairobi. A multinational team is linked by video and voice: the Kenyan agent Jama Farah gathers intelligence on the ground, Kenyan special forces wait close by to make the arrests, and Second Lieutenant Steve Watts, at a base in Nevada, flies a US Reaper drone above the city. When Farah sees the men preparing suicide bombers, Powell seeks to change the objective from capture to kill, asks Watts to ready a missile strike, and turns to her superiors for approval. Alia, a girl who lives next door, is outside selling her mother's bread.

- This was Alan Rickman's last live-action film; he died on 14 January 2016, before its American release, and the picture was dedicated to his memory. His only later credit, Alice Through the Looking Glass, uses his voice alone.
- None of the four leads, Helen Mirren, Alan Rickman, Aaron Paul and Barkhad Abdi, met during the shoot: each filmed alone with director Gavin Hood because their characters are in separate places. Paul said he and Rickman had never met in person despite co-starring in two films.
- A drone thriller made without drones: the South African Civil Aviation Authority refused the production permission to fly real ones in the country's airspace, so every aircraft on screen was created with visual effects.
