Kathleen Byron
Biography
Kathleen Byron was an English actress. Born in Manor Park, she trained at the Bristol Old Vic Theatre School. Her first speaking film appearance was in The Young Mr. Pitt (1942), directed by Carol Reed. After moving to the United States, Michael Powell convinced her to go back to Britain, where she made her best remembered films with Powell and Emeric Pressburger. She appeared in A Matter of Life and Death (1946) as an angel, and in Black Narcissus (1947) she was the disturbed Sister Ruth, earning a Best Actress nomination from the New York Film Critics' Circle. Her performance in Black Narcissus led to a supporting part in Young Bess (1953), but she disliked the experience and went back to Britain. On television, she played a recurring part in Emergency Ward 10 between 1959 and 1963, and she kept acting into the 21st century, with appearances in Emma (1996) and Saving Private Ryan (1998). She died in 2009.
