Plot summary
Two months after the killings at Camp Crystal Lake, Alice Hardy, the only survivor, is attacked in her apartment by an unseen intruder. Five years later, Paul Holt has started a training camp for counselors on the lake's shore, with Ginny Field as his assistant and trainees Sandra, Jeff, Scott, Terry, Mark, Vickie and Ted under his care. Paul tells them around a campfire the story of Jason Voorhees, the boy believed to have drowned in the lake in 1957, and of his mother Pamela, who took revenge before Alice stopped her. Paul calls Jason an urban legend and says the condemned old camp is off-limits. Ginny wonders whether a boy who watched his mother die would see any difference between right and wrong.

- Special-effects artist Tom Savini was asked to create the film's gore effects but turned the job down, partly because he was busy with another project and partly because he disliked the idea of Jason Voorhees as the killer; his replacement, Stan Winston, then also dropped out over a scheduling conflict.
- Stuntman Steve Daskewisz needed thirteen stitches on his middle finger after a stunt went wrong on set: actress Amy Steel accidentally cut his hand with a machete when he failed to turn his pickaxe out of the way in time.
- Daskewisz was hurt again later in the shoot, breaking several ribs after falling onto the pickaxe prop he was using, and separately a faulty ice-pick prop that failed to retract injured actress Adrienne King during the filming of a murder scene.
- Makeup artist Carl Fullerton gave the adult Jason long red hair and a beard, building on the facial deformities Tom Savini had designed for Jason as a child in the first film, but that bearded look was dropped for the very next sequel even though it was set the following day and directed by the same person.
- The film was originally meant to end with a shot of Pamela Voorhees' severed head opening its eyes and smiling at the camera, filmed using actress Connie Hogan as a stunt double for the head, but director Steve Miner cut the scene because he decided it made the ending too "unserious."
- The MPAA forced forty-eight seconds of cuts to avoid an X rating, objecting most to a spear-impalement murder during a sex scene; that lost footage stayed missing for decades until Samuelson Studios located the uncut version in 2020 for a Scream Factory box set.
