Martin Potter
Biography
Martin Potter is a British actor who trained with the National Youth Theatre and performed in repertory theater in Guildford and Hampstead. He was 23 when he made his first British television appearance, in The Bonegrinder (1968), a drama written by Dennis Potter. His breakthrough came when Federico Fellini chose him for the lead role of Encolpius in Fellini Satyricon (1969), after the director's first choice, Terence Stamp, was not available. After that large part, Potter returned to smaller films and television work, but he also took more prominent roles in Goodbye Gemini (1970) opposite Judy Geeson, Nicholas and Alexandra (1971), and The Big Sleep (1978), in which Robert Mitchum played Philip Marlowe. He appeared in horror films such as Craze (1974) with Jack Palance and in series including Doctor Who. In 1975 he played the title part in the mini-series The Legend of Robin Hood, and in 1985 he appeared in the American mini-series A.D. as Gaius Calpurnius Piso.
