Plot summary
Inspector Harry Callahan's testimony sends crime boss Lou Janero to San Quentin, and the resulting attention makes him a target for Janero's men and for a press he dislikes. After Callahan kills four hitmen in an ambush, the department assigns him a new partner, Al Quan, whom he advises to wear a bulletproof vest. The two look into the death of rock singer Johnny Squares, discovered in his trailer while Peter Swan shoots a music video at the Port of San Francisco. Then Swan's producer, Dean Madison, is killed in a Chinatown robbery, and a list in his pocket carries the names of Squares and Callahan. The list comes from a dead pool, a game whose players bet on which Bay Area celebrities will die.

- The remote-control car chasing Harry Callahan was a heavily modified Team Associated RC10 electric race buggy with a Reedy motor, an 8.4v NiCd battery and an off-the-shelf 1963 Chevrolet Corvette body by Parma International, its suspension lowered for high-speed stability. Director Buddy Van Horn hired 1985 IFMAR 1:10 Electric Off-Road World Champion Jay Halsey to drive it.
- Buddy Van Horn doubted the RC10 could keep up with Callahan's Oldsmobile, so he let both cars start together in a downhill scene; the toy car then outran the Oldsmobile, and the scene had to be re-filmed with the Oldsmobile reaching the bottom first.
- A single scene, in which driver Jay Halsey only had to send the RC10 at full speed to where its bomb was to be detonated, took over a week to film.
- Close-ups of the RC10 in action were filmed with a camera mounted at ground level on a motorized tricycle, and engine sound effects were added in post-production because the car ran on an electric motor.
- The Dead Pool is the only Dirty Harry film not to feature Albert Popwell, who had played a different character in each of the previous four films, and the only one recorded in Dolby Stereo.
- Clint Eastwood has said publicly that he has no interest in acting in another Dirty Harry film; in 2000 he joked that a sixth film would show Harry retired, fly-fishing or catching bad guys with his walker.
