Plot summary
Deans is a Scottish outlaw on the run in the American West, and Billy Two Hats is his young Kiowa partner. Over their time together the two come to share a father-son bond. They rob a bank, and afterward Deans' partner is killed and Billy is captured. While Billy is being moved, Deans takes Sheriff Henry Gifford by surprise at a remote trading post, and Billy escapes. Copeland, who owns the trading post, brings out a long-range buffalo rifle and kills Deans' horse. The fall breaks Deans' leg. Billy builds a travois and drags Deans behind his horse, and Gifford and Copeland set out after them.
