Plot summary
At noon on a Friday in July 1714, near Lima, Peru, a bridge the Incas had woven a century before collapses while five people cross it: the Marquess of Montemayor, Doña María; her attendant Pepita; the scribe Esteban; Uncle Pío; and a young child. Brother Juniper, a Franciscan friar traveling to the bridge, witnesses the collapse. He wants to know why God would permit such a tragedy, so he takes a scientific approach, interviewing people who knew the five victims, and over six years he assembles a large book asking whether lives follow a plan or whether there is no larger scheme.
