Plot summary
Charles Anderson writes for the weekly newspaper his late father left behind in Dayton, Tennessee, a town in steep decline, and he wants out. He sees the arrest of a teacher, John Scopes, in 1925 for teaching evolution as his chance to break into journalism's big leagues, so he gets himself a place in the middle of the case. Once he is inside that staged event, his fiancée, Rose Elizabeth Williams, holds to firmer principles, while H.L. Mencken, the influential columnist who has taken him on, asks him to make compromises he finds harder to accept the longer the trial runs.
