Plot summary
Snuffy Smith makes moonshine in the hills and spends his time dodging the revenue agents who hunt his still, among them Ed Cooper. Tempted by army pay and free khaki britches, Snuffy enlists, bringing his dog Mr. Carson along with the help of an invisibility potion. Cooper, the agent who never found the still, is his first sergeant. Snuffy's friend Don Elbie, a hillbilly in the same ranks, has invented a rangefinder he hopes the army will use. General Rosewater wants the rangefinder tested in war games against a rival general, and two fifth columnists want the device for themselves.
