Plot summary
George interrupts a meeting with a stuffy royal family, and in the bungle that follows he and Philippe, the king's snooty monkey, trade places. The two monkeys look identical, so Philippe goes home with Ted, who is puzzled by the visitor's flawless manners. George is carried to the castle of a small kingdom, where he takes the place for Castleland, the theme park of his dreams, and romps through the somber halls. His antics raise eyebrows, and they draw out Princess Isabel, the shy daughter of King Gustavo. Philippe, for his part, expects to stay with Ted until it suits him to return home.

- Hans Augusto Reyersbach and Margret Waldstein, the husband-and-wife creators of Curious George, fled Paris on bicycles in June 1940, carrying the original manuscript of the book with them.
- Curious George first appeared not in a book of his own but in the 1939 children's book Cecily G. and the Nine Monkeys, where some editions called him Fifi.
- In the United Kingdom the monkey was renamed Zozo so that he would not be linked to King George VI.
