The Swallows of Kabul (2019) on Netflix

Plot summary

Atiq fought against the Soviets and now runs the women's prison in Kabul, where the Taliban have held power for two years by the summer of 1998. He walks with a limp, and his wife Mussarat is dying of cancer. Mohsen and Zunaira, a young couple with university degrees, chafe at the rules imposed on the city; Zunaira stays indoors rather than wear the burqa in the street. They hope to teach at the clandestine school run by Professor Bayazid, which offers real lessons alongside the Koranic teaching the Taliban promote. When a crowd gathers to stone a woman, Mohsen throws a stone. On a walk together, Zunaira wears white shoes hidden under her burqa, and the two are caught laughing in the street.
