Plot summary

Cast into the sea by a storm, a man comes to on the sand of an island where nobody lives. He explores it and finds he can eat and drink: fruit, water, a thick stand of bamboo, and a smooth hill of rock above the beach. Nights pass and he sees a bridge leading out over the water and a group of musicians playing on the sand, though neither is there. He wants to get away, so he lashes bamboo together into a raft. Something he cannot see wrecks it and drives him back. He makes a second raft, larger than the first, and the same thing happens. On his third try the raft comes apart again, and this time the creature reveals itself, a red sea turtle of great size.
