Plot summary
In 1870 an explosion in a laboratory kills Napoleon III, and his son's diplomacy averts the war with Prussia, but scientists and inventors begin to disappear. Radio, electricity and the combustion engine never arrive, and France burns coal and then forests to run its steam engines. The Franklin family works in secret on the ultimate serum that would let soldiers recover from any wound. Police raid their laboratory; Annette injects the latest version into her daughter April's snowglobe, and the family flees. Ten years on, April and Darwin, her talking cat, live hidden inside a giant metal statue of a Napoleon while she keeps refining the formula, and scientists are still vanishing.
