Plot summary
Jed Catlow and Ben Cowan fought on the same side in the Civil War. Catlow became a thief, and Cowan became the marshal tracking him. Catlow stands accused of rustling cattle, most of all from the wealthy rancher Parkman, who has hired the gunfighter Orville Miller to kill him. Catlow offers to surrender and rides a stagecoach to Fort Smith beside Cowan. He is also making for Hermosillo, Mexico, where Rosita loves him and where a mule train carrying two million dollars in gold is expected. The ranchers send Cowan after him, and Miller rides with him.

- Leonard Nimoy wrote about Catlow in both of his autobiographies because it let him break away from playing Spock on Star Trek, and he said the time he spent making the film was one of the happiest of his life, even though his part was brief.
- In June 1970, novelist Louis L'Amour said Catlow would be the first of five films made from his novels to star Stephen Boyd, the others being Down the Long Hills, Flint, Radigan and Hanging Woman Creek.
