Biography

Jack Douglas was an English actor and comedian known for the Carry On comedies. Born in Newcastle upon Tyne, he came from a theater family and left home as a teenager to work at Feldman's Theatre. He directed a pantomime in Sunderland and later stepped into a lead role at the Kingston Empire, which led an agent to pair him with Joe Baker as a double act. They toured widely, including Australia, New Zealand and South Africa, then joined the BBC children's show Crackerjack. Douglas worked with Des O'Connor and created the nervous stage character Alf Ippititimus. American viewers saw him on NBC's Kraft Music Hall in 1969, billed as Jack D. Douglas. He appeared in the last seven original Carry On films, among them Carry On Behind (1975), Carry on Dick (1974) and Carry On England (1976), and returned for Carry On Columbus (1992). He also spent a year in the stage show Carry On London.

    Douglas created his nervous character Alf Ippititimus, known for the catchphrase phwaay, one night at Butlins in Clacton when his co-star Joe Baker was locked out and failed to appear.
