Fay Holden
Biography
Fay Holden was a British-born actress who made her career in America after leaving England for Vancouver, British Columbia. Born in Birmingham, England, she worked early on as Gaby Fay. During the early 1930s she co-owned The Empress Theatre in Vancouver until 1933 and helped establish The British Guild Players, a company that specialized in comedies. After moving to Hollywood, she built a filmography of 46 pictures made from 1935 to 1958. Her most familiar role was Emily Hardy, who appeared as the mother of Mickey Rooney's character across the Andy Hardy pictures. The series drew an enormous audience as the 1930s turned into the 1940s, and Holden acted in 15 of its 16 films, fewer only than Rooney. She also played Hazel, the mother of Samson, in Cecil B. DeMille's Samson and Delilah (1949). She died in 1973.
