Plot summary
Roy Solomon takes his wife Denise, their teenage daughter Jess and their little son Ben out of Chicago to a farm in North Dakota, where he means to grow sunflowers and hold the family together. Money is short: Roy has been unemployed a long time, and the care Ben needed after a car crash two years earlier drained the family. Jess was driving that night, with Ben in the back seat, and he has been mute since. Roy hires a drifter, John Burwell, to help on the land until harvest. Crows swarm the property, and Jess and Ben see ghosts in the house, but Roy and Denise do not believe what Jess tells them.

Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.
- Ravens stood in for the crows that terrorise the Solomon farm: the production could not get hold of enough trained crows, so the birds on screen are ravens while the characters keep calling them crows.
- Todd Farmer's discarded Scarecrow script did eventually reach the screen: it became the basis of the 2009 prequel Messengers 2: The Scarecrow.
