Plot summary
Kyle Pratt, an American aviation engineer living in Berlin, is escorting her husband David's body back to New York, with their six-year-old daughter Julia beside her, on a new double-decker jet she helped design. When Kyle wakes from a nap, Julia is missing, and the flight attendants find no record that the girl ever boarded: no boarding pass, nothing on the manifest, no extra passenger in the head count. Julia has wandered off before, so Kyle at first assumes she will be found quickly. While the crew searches and Captain Rich and sky marshal Carson confront her, Kyle insists that someone on board has taken her daughter.

The Association of Professional Flight Attendants called for an official boycott of the film, saying it depicts flight attendants as rude and unsympathetic towards a distressed passenger, and objecting that one attendant is revealed to be an accomplice in a plan to extort a ransom from the airline.- Tommie Hutto-Blake, president of the Association of Professional Flight Attendants, said that should there be another 9/11 it would be critical for cabin crew to have passengers' support rather than the distrust the movie may engender, adding that crew members who perished in the line of duty deserve more respect.
- The film draws heavily on Alfred Hitchcock's The Lady Vanishes, in which one passenger goes missing aboard a train and only the main character remembers her, and the similarities have led to Flightplan being called a remake of Hitchcock's film.
- Sean Bean was cast in order to subvert his typecasting as a villain and to mislead audiences into thinking that he was part of the villainous plot.
- Flightplan gave Matt Bomer his film debut; the cast also includes Peter Sarsgaard, Erika Christensen, Kate Beahan, Greta Scacchi and Sean Bean.
- The score leans on gamelan instruments, prepared piano and string arrangements, and no brass instruments are used in the soundtrack at all.
