Plot summary
A team from the intergalactic fast food chain Crumb's Crunchy Delights descends on Earth, planning to make human flesh the newest taste sensation. After they wipe out the New Zealand town Kaihoro, the country's Astro-Investigation and Defense Service is called in to deal with the problem. Things are complicated due to Giles, an aid worker who comes to Kaihoro the same day to collect change from the residents. He is captured by the aliens, and AIaDS stages a rescue mission that quickly becomes an all-out assault on the aliens' headquarters.

- Peter Jackson made his first feature on weekends over four years around his home suburb of Pukerua Bay, using a 25-year-old 16mm Bolex camera. It began as a 20-minute short called Roast of the Day and cost about $25,000 until the New Zealand Film Commission put in roughly NZ$235,000 to finish it.
- Jackson plays both the hero Derek and the alien Robert, and the two fight each other halfway down a cliff. The scene only works because of careful editing that stitches together shots filmed months apart.
- The guns were mostly homemade props built from recycled aluminium and wood, mixed with blank-firing firearms. The actors had to shake the fakes by hand to simulate recoil, with the muzzle flash and the bang added later in post-production.
- Jackson's aliens were finished in a domestic kitchen rather than a workshop: every alien mask in the film was baked in Peter Jackson's mother's oven.
- Queensland banned an already cut version of the film three weeks into its run, and the row led to the Queensland Film Board of Review being fired and dissolved in 1990. The Australian video release then advertised the words "Banned in Queensland" on its cover.
- Accepting his Academy Award in 2004, Peter Jackson brought up Bad Taste and Meet the Feebles from the stage, joking that both had been wisely overlooked by the Academy.
