Plot summary
Quarry workers in Georgia find a pale, creamy substance bubbling out of the ground. Marketed as the Stuff and sold in tubs like ice cream or yogurt, it has zero calories and becomes a nationwide hit, though nobody can say what it is. A boy named Jason is convinced the product is alive, but his family, who eat nothing else, dismiss him. The ice cream industry, losing sales, hires former FBI agent David 'Mo' Rutherford to learn what the Stuff is and put an end to it. He teams with junk food mogul Charles W. 'Chocolate Chip Charlie' Hobbs, whose company has slipped away from him, and with Nicole, the advertising executive behind the Stuff's campaign.

- Larry Cohen wanted to cast Arsenio Hall as "Chocolate Chip Charlie" W. Hobbs, thinking him a good actor and a rising star, but executives at New World Pictures wanted someone more recognizable and cast Garrett Morris instead.
- When The Stuff was eaten on screen, Tofutti, yogurt and whipped cream were used, while mashed potato flakes, polyurethane foam and firefighting foam were used for visual effect. Because fish bones made up the firefighting foam, it had a fetid odor.
- Cohen said that the day The Stuff opened in New York a hurricane hit and the newspapers were not delivered, so although the film had received great reviews, nobody ever got to read a single word of them.
- Four models of Garrett Morris's head were made for Charlie's transformation sequence, one of which Cohen still claimed to own.
- Cohen hired the company Effects Associates to supply some of the special effects shots, but was not satisfied with the shots of exploding factory buildings and paid only half of the agreed price for them, about $8,000.
