Alida Valli
Biography
Alida Valli was an Italian actress whose career ran from the 1930s to the early 2000s. Born in Pola, Istria, she trained at Rome's Centro Sperimentale di Cinematografia and debuted in 1934. After early success in Mille lire al mese, she won a special acting prize at the Venice Film Festival for Piccolo mondo antico (1941). Signed by David Selznick, she appeared in Hollywood films including The Paradine Case (1947), The Miracle of the Bells (1948), The Third Man (1949), Walk Softly, Stranger (1950). Returning to Europe, she starred in Luchino Visconti's Senso (1954). She paused film work in 1956 for the stage, running a theatrical company in Italy. Later films included Georges Franju's Eyes Without a Face (1960), Pier Paolo Pasolini's Oedipus Rex (1967), Bernardo Bertolucci's The Spider's Stratagem (1970), and Dario Argento's Suspiria (1977). Her last film role was Semana Santa (2002), and in 1997 she received the Golden Lion for career achievement at the Venice Film Festival.

Valli's breakthrough was Mille lire al mese in 1939. Following many comedy parts, she became known as a dramatic actress in Mario Soldati's Piccolo mondo antico, which brought her a special Best Actress prize at the Venice Film Festival.

In 1956, Valli decided to give up movies and focus on the stage instead. She ran a theatrical company in Italy that put on Broadway plays.
